Beals Point Campground & Oak Beach Review

If you’re looking for a nice combination of a well appointed campground and a nearby lake that offers fishing, boating, picnics, and water sports, then check out my real life Beals Point Campground & Oak Beach Review.

About Beals Point

Beals Point Campground is located just north of Folsom Dam in the Folsom Lake State Recreation Area. It has 69 family campsites (tents, trailers and motor homes up to 31 feet long). The RV loop campsites (sites 50-69) offer full hookups (water, sewer and electricity). A dump station available and wheelchair accessible restrooms with showers are available too.

Beals Point is available for day use as well and features barbecue pits, shade areas and large grassy areas for family picnics and other activities. Another feature is access to the American River bicycle trail, a 32-mile paved trail starts at Beal’s Point and follows the scenic American River to Old Sacramento.

My Thoughts About Beals Point Campground

We stayed for three days and two nights in the RV Loop campsites area. We liked the proximity to Sacramento, paved campground roads, full hookups, easy RV access, and level campsites.

For the most part the campsites appeared to be spaced out nicely and separated most of the time by trees and bushes. If possible, I would recommend reserving campsites that do not back up to Auburn Folsom Rd because of road noise…it can take away from the “outdoors experience” in my opinion.

Also, the fire pits are the tallest I’ve ever seen in a campsite and are probably tall to help minimize risk of fire…but it does take away from the campfire experience since you have to stand up to see the fire. But, overall we liked the campground because of its proximity to Sacramento and to Oak Beach.

About Oak Beach

Oak Beach is located at the end of Park Rd past the Granite Bay main beach. Granite Bay main beach has a sandy beach, buoyed swim area and lifeguard services during the summer season make this area a safe location for swimming and playing in the water. Barbecue pits, shade areas and large grassy areas can accommodate many family picnics and other activities.

My Thoughts About Oak Beach

Because of the low water levels at Folsom Lake, we opted to visit Oak Beach because this is the only beach that we were made aware of that allows visitors to drive onto the beach up to the lake shoreline. The other beaches do not allow this and because the lake water levels were low during our visit it appeared like quite a trek to the lake shoreline from the parking areas.

We really liked the convenience of driving to the shoreline so we didn’t have to drag our equipment from a parking lot to the shoreline. Note, land to the shoreline from the road can be rough and uneven. But, we saw both trucks and regular sedans at the shoreline.

We noticed other visitors brought pop up canopies for shade, jet skis, barbeques, camping chairs, music, etc. There were public toilets, but note they were far from the shore line (again because of the low water levels). We brought a small propane stove, beach tent, camping table, camping chairs, chair umbrellas, beach tent, portable toilet, and popup changing tent (for the portable toilet). See links below for the equipment we used.
